Robert Rumas

Date of birth 1966

Studies: Academy of Fine Arts, Gdansk, diploma 1991. Author of sculptures, spatial objects, photographs. Curator, designer of exhibition spaces and arrangement of exhibitions, stage designer collaborating with museums, galleries and theatres in Poland. Stipends of: The Batory Foundation, Warsaw, 1993; The Culture Foundation, Warsaw, 1999, 2002; Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York, 1998; Mayor of Gdansk, 2001; Marshall of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, 2003; Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, 2003, 2006; Self-Government of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, 2006. Laureate of the Award of Gdansk Society of Art Lovers, 2003.

From the beginning of his work Rumas subjects Polish Catholicism to criticism. He often connects kitsch with ‘national’ symbolism. The artist’s interdisciplinary work is multifaceted, based on the specific historical, social, political or cultural context.
