Bednarski made Karl Marx’s first portrait in 1978 as his diploma project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He then produced several plaster heads of Marx, without arms or base and one three-times larger one, cast in white cement. The portrait was received as criticism of communist propaganda. Marx’s portrait remains the most frequently used motif in Bednarski’s oeuvre and is a commentary on social events.
